Texas Preserves Its Economic Miracle As One In Five Residents Face Food Insecurity

HOUSTON—Texas has protected its reputation for abundance by asking twenty food banks to serve more than four million residents a year, including nearly one in five Texans who cannot reliably obtain enough food.

Feeding America’s 2026 Map the Meal Gap study, using 2024 data, estimates that 19.4 percent of Texans experience food insecurity. The rate for children is 26.1 percent, or nearly two million children. Potter County approaches one resident in four, while the Rio Grande Valley and Corpus Christi regions exceed 20 percent. Growth remains statewide.

Food banks distribute more than 700 million pounds through thousands of community partners, but they are designed to supplement federal nutrition assistance rather than replace it. Feeding Texas says the distinction is measurable: for every meal supplied by a food bank, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program supplies nine. The private system is now being invited to discover efficiencies on the other side of that ratio.

Calls to 211 seeking food help rose 28.6 percent from February through June, and referrals to pantries rose nearly 37 percent. Rural organizations face particular strain because they rely heavily on federal food and funding. In 2025, the Agriculture Department canceled two programs that had supplied $1 billion in products to food banks and schools, describing the previous spending as an unsustainable expectation.

The expectation has now been made sustainable by removing it. Texas families will continue needing meals, food banks will continue locating them, and the state’s economic miracle can remain a statistical achievement that does not have to fit inside a grocery bag.
