NEW YORK—The administration’s long campaign to protect America from Chinese artificial intelligence has met its first serious obstacle, which is that the president’s family found a way to charge for it.

World Liberty Financial, the crypto venture in which the Trump family holds a 38 percent stake, is working with a Hong Kong platform called WorldClaw that sells customers access to ninety AI models. Forty-three of them were built by Chinese companies, including Alibaba and Baidu, both of which the Department of Defense has placed on its list of firms tied to the Chinese military. Users can pay in USD1, the family’s own stablecoin, which means the family earns a little each time someone buys the very thing the government is warning them about.

No law has been broken. Chinese AI models remain legally available to American users, a fact the administration mentions rarely and the family’s accountants mention often. The arrangement simply places the president at the head of a government that discourages a product and a business that resells it, collecting on the second while campaigning against the first.

Analysts described the setup as a conflict of interest, then corrected themselves, noting that a conflict requires two interests in tension, and here the two appeared to be cooperating beautifully. The models the Pentagon fears and the coin the family owns have found each other, and the introduction fee flows in one direction.

Representatives said the venture was fully compliant and declined to explain how compliance and national security had come to point opposite ways. At press time the government was still working hard to keep Chinese AI out of American hands, except for the hands holding the receipt.
